Quiet Spaces
The practice’s first book, Quiet Spaces is published by Thames & Hudson in the UK and worldwide.
The book is a search for quietude, through projects of the studio in the UK, France and New York, and places of inspiration – Palladio, Bawa, Barragán, Zumthor, Kettles Yard, Hepworth.
The projects and places were shot specially for the book by Harry Crowder, with one project by Hélène Binet.
I wrote an introductory essay Quietude and four chapter essays on the themes of Space Silence Shadows and Life.
Esteemed potter and writer Edmund de Waal wrote the beautiful foreword More Than Enough. It being easier to quote someone else than myself, here are some of Edmund’s words:
This lambent book is a meditation on time. It is a series of pauses in particular buildings.
His feeling for the kindness of materials shines through. You want to touch.
